What is going on in Astoria?

If you have never heard of or been to Astoria it is kind of difficult to explain the mystic of Astoria.  From the Columbia River to the historic houses to the International Film Festival to the Astoria Music Festival to the unique population and the goonies.

Here are some of our favorite things:

What about some excellent food? In the summer we probably are asked 5 times a day where is the best place to eat.  .

Baked Alaska - fine dining overlooking the Columbia River.  Great spot to watch the big ships go by or watch the pilot boat come in and out or just a crazy evening of trivia on Friday nights.  Bring your smart cap.

Clemente's - this is a beautiful space with excellent food, excellent art and the best yam fries in town.  As well as the hosts of the Doodle Offs.  Thanks.

Fort George - local brewery with really good beer and really good sandwiches.  We like beer.

Fulio's  - is a restaurant (pasta and the best steaks in town) and a deli.  A week is not complete without at least two stops here, one for lunch and one for dinner.

T'Paul's Supper Club - newly opened (used to be the Schooner.)  Wow, they did a great job of redecorating and the food ain't bad either!  Great quesadillas (like the Urban Cafe) and huge, huge delicious salads.

What about some fun!

Shanghaied in Astoria - historical melodrama loosely documenting Astoria's early days when you could be sucked through a hole in the floor and set out to sea.  And you get to through popcorn at the villians.

The Astoria Music Festival - two weeks in June of great music.

Astoria International Film Festival - in the late summer fall.

Where will you sleep?

The Commodore - this is the newest old hotel in Astoria.  Newly rehabed, it is so cool and reasonably priced.  Check it out.

The Cannery Pier Hotel - all rooms look at the Columbia River.  If your arms were long enough, you could touch the ships going by.  wow.

The Hotel Elliot - is also a rehabed old hotel, very cool.  Make sure you turn the heated floors in the bathroom on before you go to dinner.  oooohh, thats nice.
